“Buy Less, Live More” campaign:

Buy less live more fake card © not advert

Fake credit cards are being issued by the Methodist Church for Lent — but they should be easy to spot. Instead of the long number on the card face, they have “Mark 10:17-27” — the Bible reference for the story of the rich young ruler whom Jesus told to sell all that he had. Where the chip normally is, the word “£nil” appears.

The cards slip into a wallet or purse, in front of a credit or debit card, to make the cardholder think before spending, Toby Scott, the Church’s media-relations officer, said on Wednesday. “We wanted to make sure they would not be used fraudulently. The cards cannot be used in a machine, and we hope shopkeepers will be bright enough to spot what they are.”

Holders sign the back of the card to pledge them to thoughtful shopping. “We hope that they will think about switching to locally sourced products, or ask themselves whether they really need a new pair of shoes or an expensive holiday,” Mr Scott says.

The initiative follows praise at the Methodist Conference for an earlier self-denial campaign, “No New Shoes”. The cards are free (£1.50 postage for packs of ten): phone 01733 325002 or visit www.buylesslivemore. org.uk
