Top results for church schools
FOUR Church of England secondary schools were among the most successful 50 comprehensive schools in last summer’s A-level examinations, writes Margaret Holness. The schools were: Canon Slade School, Bolton; Kings School, Peterborough; Hutton High School, Preston; and St Aidan’s High School, Harrogate. Wilson’s School, Surrey, one of the two remaining Anglican selective schools, was among the top ten grammar schools.

Limerick Bishop to retire
THE Bishop of Limerick & Killaloe, in the Republic of Ireland, the Rt Revd Michael Mayes, is to retire at the end of March. He was ordained in 1964, and served in Japan from 1968 to 1974, when he returned to Ireland as area secretary of USPG in Belfast. After incumbencies in Cork, he was elected Bishop of Kilmore in 1993 and translated in 2000. The Bishop has taken a special interest in international development work.

Schools face closure after cuts
SIXTEEN Church of England primaries in Herefordshire are among 35 schools in the county facing closure or merger, after cuts were announced by the county council. The diocese was not consulted beforehand, said Dr Ian Terry, Diocesan Director of Education.

Spring Harvest, ICC merger on cards
SPRING HARVEST, founded in 1979, and International Christian Communications (ICC), a recording and copyright publishing company, founded in 1976, have announced that they hope to merge. They have been working together for nearly 30 years on music products. Details should be finalised by the autumn, the organisations said in a statement.
