Norway has rethink on Bible words

by Rachel Harden

CHURCH leaders in Norway have backed a proposal by the national Ombudsman for Children, Reidar Hjermann, that new translations of the Bible must avoid language that justifies corporal punishment.

Mr Hjermann said that his office had been contacted by children who had been subjected to physical harm that they believe could have been justified by the Bible.

A statement issued by the Bishops’ Conference of Norway said: “Today the word ‘chastisement’ has acquired a meaning that differs from its original intended meaning. In modern Norwegian usage, the word ‘chastisement’ is virtually synonymous with corporal punishment.

“Today this word is unsuitable for reflecting what is involved when the Bible speaks of parents’ responsibility to raise and guide their children.”

Mr Hjermann said that the statement was a signal that violence against children could not be authorised by the Bible.

The proposal was welcomed by campaigning groups, including the Churches’ Network for Non-Violence (CNNV).
