A century of chapel
![]() EXPRESS & STAR |
| May Oakley (above) celebrated a century of attendance at a West Midlands church this week. The 104-year-old was born opposite Dixons Green Methodist Church in Dudley in 1904, and first went there at the age of four in 1908. |

| Mrs Oakley (pictured above, centre, in the early 1920s with her sisters Florrie, left, and Clara, right) was married at the church in 1938, and had a thanksgiving service for her only child Valerie there in 1944. Her husband John’s funeral took place there in 1987. Janice Bartley, the church treasurer, described Mrs Oakley as an “amazing woman”. “May’s always at church every Sunday, and she has always been involved in church activities. She was the network secretary for women’s work for 40 years, a pastoral leader, a Sunday-school teacher, and she sang in the choir for more than 70 years. She’s got a lovely alto voice, and sang ‘O for a closer walk with God’ at her celebratory tea party.” Mrs Oakley celebrated her 104th birthday on Wednesday, at a double celebration when the church marked its 138th anniversary |
