Calming the storm
![]() |
| Archbishop Elias Chacour, leader of the Melkite Catholic Church, addressed GAFCON participants under the trees by the source of the Jordan, when the conference travelled north to the Sea of Galilee. Looking across at all the nationalities present, he spoke of “unity in diversity”, a phrase that has had an uncertain reception at times. None the less, he pressed on with what, in different company, would have been termed an enthusiastically inclusive message: “Look for the friend in your neighbour rather than the enemy, and you will discover the beauty of a child of God.” He referred to the mosaics to be found in churches near by. “You don’t just use one colour of stone. And imagine a stone falling down. The whole picture would be incomplete until it was found. Where is that fallen stone?” And the shepherd looked for the lost sheep and left the 99 “because the 99 will always be incomplete without the other one”. |
