‘Amazing’ NHS is praised in Abbey

by Ed Beavan

A SERVICE of thanksgiving to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the National Health Service took place at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday.

The Bishop of Gloucester, the Rt Revd Michael Perham, who chairs the Hospital Chaplaincies Council, preached, praising the “amazing achievements” of the NHS.

He described the founding of the NHS in 1948 as a “brave and visionary social revolution”. He also paid tribute to the NHS staff. “Healthcare ‘professionals’ . . . continue to be people of dedication, continue to exercise care and compassion towards their patients.”

The service was attended by the Prince of Wales, the Prime Minister, the Health Secretary, Alan Johnson, and the NHS chief executive, David Nicholson, as well as representatives from every NHS Trust in the country.

Need for chaplains.
The Bishop of Chichester, the Rt Revd John Hind, has called for chaplaincy services to be a statutory provision within the NHS rather than treated as “a bolt-on or occasional or optional extra”. Speaking in the House of Lords, he also called for more support for the hospice movement.
