The new Church Times archive

The Church Times archive is changing. The present archive on our website has done well enough, if you want to see something from 2004, can hit on the right search phrase, and don’t want to see all the entries. Now, though, in partnership with UKPressOnline, we are beginning to prepare a complete archive of the paper’s 148-year history.

The complete 21st-century archive is now available: cataloguing every issue from 2000 to the present. The software allows you to view, search, and print pages.

In addition, we have prepared the first 26 years, from the paper’s very first issue in 1863 to 1892. This period saw the fierce battles over Ritualism: one of the reasons why the Church Times was established was to defend the High Church against “Broad and Low Bigots”. The paper also warned against the digging of a Channel Tunnel, criticised President Lincoln for going to the theatre (where he was assassinated), and had a stern word for one of its advertisers: “It would be curious to learn how such a cad came to be a priest.”

We hope to expand the online archive as funds become available. For details about sponsoring the digitising of more of the Church Times archive, please email archive@hymnsam.co.uk
